Breast Cancer Wellness Support Yoga Class
Wednesday, 7:00-8:15 pm
With Lily Sibley, CYT, RYT, CLM, Reiki Master
Ocean Spirit Yoga is offering a class for women who have breast cancer. The class is designed for all stages: diagnosis, treatment, surgery and recovery. NO PRIOR YOGA EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. The intention for this class is simply put: come to focus on feeling better and to enhance the rehabilitation of a weakened body. The class will be appropriate for all levels of fitness. The class fee is $64 for 8 weeks.
Through gentle yoga stretches, life enhancing breathing techniques, and guided meditation using imagery, students will learn:
- how to retain or regain movement and muscle tone
- how to restore physical and emotional balance
- methods for reducing stress, anxiety and depression
- how to boost their energy level through safe and gentle yoga
- ways to restore physical functioning and well being
- to engage in the physical self, focusing on the now, leaving worries and future thinking behind
Yoga means “union”; research supports the benefits of yoga as part of a system of personal care that may have the ability to combine physical exercise, meditation, and breathing techniques to create union of the mind, body and spirit. The American Cancer Society acknowledges that yoga “contributes to overall physical fitness and (it) can help reduce the pain of some chronic illnesses.” According to the National Cancer Institute, “nearly one fourth of major treatment centers offer yoga in addition to standard medical treatment.” Research studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine and Cancer Journal support “yoga’s capacity to relieve the pain and insomnia that often effect people with life-threatening illnesses.”
